About The Role:
As a Research Engineer you will be part of our Research team. The Research Department is responsible for undertaking technical Research to support the development and deployment of SMT’s CAE Software portfolio and SMT’s Engineering Services delivery.
In This Role, You Will:
- Research and prototype applications to SMT’s MASTA software and internal processes with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning methodologies.
- Data collection and analysis to provide new engineering methods and solutions.
- Research potential new areas and methods for CAE simulation for drivelines (or beyond) via some of the technical skills below:
- Prototyping code in Python or C#. Using scripting into MASTA.
- Using some or all SMT’s MASTA & MEASA software.
- Using commercial CAE & CAD software.
- Operating and collecting and analysing data from SMT’s physical test rigs.
- Research new Engineering methods, procedures and workflow efficiencies.
- Support the testing of new SMT software functionalities.
- Help SMT’s software products technical support team to disseminate knowledge to customers. This includes attending and providing resource for some SMT client technical training sessions (virtual or in person at SMT UK or client sites).
- Provide technical support and resource for client Engineering projects.
- Provide sales and marketing support via technical case studies and attending conferences.
You will report directly to the department’s Senior Research Engineer. The role will be based at SMT’s Head Office in Nottingham, with occasional work at SMT’s Testing Facility also in Nottingham.
What You’ll Need To Succeed:
- Master’s Degree in a numerical science (strong 2:1 or higher) with strong analytical skills. (PhD desirable but not essential)
- Be a conscientious team player with the ability to foster good working relationships.
- Be self-motivated and able to drive own research projects.
- Have good presentation skills to be able to clearly communicate your work. Training and guidance will be provided so that you can excel in this area
- Knowledge and experience of CAD, FEA & MBD software such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, MSC Adams (Desirable but not essential)
- Knowledge and experience of programming languages including Python and Python packages including Pandas, Matplotlib, SciPy. C# experience also may be beneficial.
- Understanding of fundamental machine learning concepts, e.g. supervised/unsupervised/reinforcement learning, model training and validation. Use of various machine learning model architectures and their implementation using Python packages, e.g. Scikit-learn, PyTorch or Keras, etc. or from first principles.
