Complete Electric Vehicle Powertrain Development with SMT
![]() |
The electric vehicle market is the primary growth segment and future of the automotive industry. Striving to develop new and better software for powertrain engineers SMT has developed the all new MASTA 12, which focuses on the system level integration of motor and gearbox. Paul Langlois, SMT Software Engineering Director, said “MASTA 12 is the first powertrain design and analysis software to offer seamless analysis of both motor and gearbox. This enables a greatly improved workflow and reduces the potential for errors” Paul continued, “A host of new features and improvements will electrify engineer’s design and analysis capabilities like never before.” “Our continuing development programme is focused on streamlining model-based understanding and improvement of both component and system level performance. There will be many more enhancements and tools coming soon,” Paul added. |
Electric Vehicle Motor Modelling
This exciting feature allows you to generate electric machine concepts in seconds. Using MASTA 12’s parameter based electric motor input you simply select from three major design configurations. Consisting of Interior permanent magnet motors, permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motors or synchronous reluctance motors this feature allows fast reliable analyses of the different machines. You can define stator, rotor and winding properties with a few simple keyboard taps and get a complete motor specification and detailed analysis. Running multiple parameter design scenarios at once you can easily compare motor performance, and overall system response for the different design configurations. | ![]() |
Detailed Electric Vehicle Motor Modelling

MASTA already boasts a fully functional CAD package and using the embedded Geometry Modeller the system modelling and design process is streamlined and more efficient. Building on this ground-breaking capability, SMT have applied the same level of control and adaptability to our electric motor functionality. |
Fine-tune electric motor designs
At the click of a button, a template motor design within MASTA can be converted to a fully customisable CAD iteration, with seamless live links to MASTA, allowing for instant update and results feedback. | ![]() |
Import Existing Electric Motor Designs

Built with flexibility in mind, MASTA 12 will accept electric motors you may have already designed. Simply load the stator and rotor CAD design into Geometry Modeller and pass the specifications to MASTA with ease. |
A New MASTA, With the Same Feel
Building on our core strength of simple to use software the SMT MASTA software development team have kept to our tradition of a clean, user-friendly interface aimed at giving a consistent powertrain development experience. We have provided a familiar MASTA experience which you will be able to learn and use in short space of time. Veteran MASTA users will be pleased to see familiar customisable editors, customisable reports, databases and much more. This keeps the learning curve to a minimum and will get you moving with all the updates, in no time at all. This game-changing functionality doesn’t stop here. MASTA 12’s Electric Machine mode has an abundance of analysis and optimisation capabilities. From flux density visualisation to the calculation of tooth loads for NVH excitation, we’ll reveal all in the next part. |
