SMT sponsor the Chico State Racing Team of California State University for the second year running in preparation for the upcoming Baja SAE California competition.
The Baja SAE event is an annual intercollegiate competition that brings together the brightest engineering students put against each other to design, develop and drive the most advanced off-road race vehicle they can assemble.
The team have been tasked with building their own car from scratch, this includes designing and building a two-stage reduction gearbox as part of the transmission.
With access to MASTA capabilities, SMT aided the team in streamlining their design, analysis and manufacturing processes.
“MASTA has been instrumental in our design of the 17-18 gearbox.
Creating our second ever custom gearbox has been faster and more efficient than ever thanks to MASTA’s capabilities.
The ability to analyse the shafts, gears, and bearings all at once has streamlined the process to validate our design.
Using everything we learned from our first iteration we’ve been able to optimize our second gearbox in every way.
This ultimately led to a reduction in weight of 25%, which is huge in our competition!
Without the support from SMT our drivetrain would not be as successful as it is today.”

SMT congratulates the team on their performance last year and wishes them the best of luck in the upcoming competition.
